- Epic Games got a huge investment from Sony and by the looks of it, Fortnite will not die.
Epic Games is best known for being the developers of Fortnite. However, their number one product was the Unreal Engine for a long time. The company evolved over the years and with Fortnite they hit jackpot. The game became a huge success even though Epic Games did not design it for Battle Royale in the beginning. Today Fortnite is still one of the biggest games and it will stay there for some time. Epic Games managed to consolidate its player base one way or another. The good relationship between Epic and Sony is undeniable since even in the last PS5 reveal event, we have seen Epic showcasing their new Unreal Engine 5.
But Sony decided to take things a bit further as they have announced that they acquired a minority stake at Epic Games for $250M. This deal is apart from Epic’s $750 million dollar investment round in June. Sony has a minority stake at Epic and interestingly so does Chinese giants Tencent. Tencent acquired %40 of Epic Games in 2012 for $330M. This shows us how big Epic Games has gotten over the years.
Epic Games has received a $250 Million investment from Sony that gives the company a minority stake, will aim for a broader collaboration between both companies, will not impact releasing games on other platforms

Of course, Epic Games is not doing well on every front. The company’s recent ventures such as Epic Games Store and Epic Games Publishing was not very successful. Although one can argue that Epic Games Store is in a better situation than 6 months before. Their recent Mega Sales pulled a lot of players to the store and for the first time, Epic Games Store had engagement numbers close to Steam. Sony knows that even though Epic’s other ventures are not successful their engine, on the other hand, will be used by thousands of games. Also, with this deal, there is a possibility of exclusive Epic games with the new PS5.
