All new League of Legends tournament, the Pacific Championship Series will kick off this weekend. Paris Saint-Germain F.C.’s Esports wing- Talon Esports will be there for a shot at the title.
Talon Esports
Hailing from Hong Kong, Talon Esports was founded in 2016. However, it was not until 2020 that it officially launched it’s League of Legends team. The first to join the lineup was former Flash Wolves top-laner, Su “Hanabi” Chia-Hsiang. The team also consists of Kim “River” Dong-woo, Kim “Candy” Seung-ju, Wong “Unified” Chun Kit and Ling “Kaiwing” Kai Wing. Shortly after starting, the League roster started turning heads. Talon had become second runners-up at the PCS 2020 Spring. The next month they pick up both championship titles at PCS Spring Playoffs and the 2020 Mid-Season Showdown.
Partnering up with PSG
PSG aren’t new in the international Esports arena. Also founded in 2016, PSG Esports has made their marks in quite a few popular online games including FIFA, DOTA and League of Legends. Their journey in LoL, however, wasn’t as smooth as they had planned. Despite barely making it to the European League of Legends Challenger Series in their debut year, the roster fell off the same year. This was due to PSG not liking Riot’s revenue sharing model stating that it was “very far from compensating the costs of a structure with European ambitions.” Failing to qualify for the LEC probably also contributed to the cause.
It’s comeback time for the Footballing giants though, at least in the world of Esports. On 18th June, Talon Esports announced that it has partnered up with PSG Esports and will henceforth be known as PSG Talon. A multi- year contract has been agreed upon by both parties. Fabien Allegre, Brand Diversification and Merchandising Director of PSG stated in a release: “We’re delighted to kick-off this exciting partnership with Talon and to make a return to League of Legends. Esports remains one of the core pillars of the Club’s brand diversification strategy, as we look to enter the next phase of our growth plan.”

It’s interesting how Sports and Esports go hand in hand. PSG’s involvement in the Esports scene has certainly proved so. With all the hype around Talon Esports, it’ll be exciting to witness how far the team goes at the PCS and beyond.
