Some of the most successful movies in history are based on books. But can the same be said about video games? Most definitely. Some successful books are developed into video games. Of course, sometimes these adaptations are not enjoyed by hardcore fans of the books; both movies and video games, but they are still intriguing.
Books can give us a large timeframe on what happened. Movies, on the other hand generally give us a smaller timeframe on how the story plays out. However, games can give both of these. In the gaming world, you can fit a big story into a single game, and gamers get to have fun playing a character that they only imagined from reading books.
Today we are going to list top 5 books to games adaptations, and how they impactful they were in the gaming industry.
1. Lord of the Rings
“One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them”
Coming at number one, we have Lord of the Rings. Regarded as one of the most-read books, it is still a best seller. J.R.R Tolkien created a world so vast and so detailed the amount of materials you can use seems to be endless. We all know the books, and we all know the movies and the games. There is not a single other adaptation that can come even close to LOTR. There’s probably a dozen Lord of the Rings games released by now. But probably the most successful one was Battle for Middle-Earth. Battle for Middle-Earth Changed the gaming scene. Also, it was so successful people still play it on private servers today, even though the game is over 10 years old.
Battle for Middle Earth was an RTS game. The game was also mixed with movies such as the amazing music from Lord of The Rings movies. However soon after the second game, EA lost the license rights over the book. Therefore players still want to see a Battle for Middle Earth 3 today but it probably will not happen anytime soon.
2. The Witcher Series
“Lesser, greater, middling, it’s all the same. Proportions are negotiated, boundaries blurred. I’m not a pious hermit, I haven’t done only good in my life. But if I’m to choose between one evil and another, then I prefer not to choose at all.”
At number 2, we have The Witcher series. The Witcher series was extremely good, we all know that The Witcher series transformed the gaming world because the story was extremely rich. Also, most of the RPG games out there today prefer the open world. Witcher did not create an open world but an extremely intense and filled world. Every zone was amazing. The Witcher Series was amazing. For a decade filled with very god RPG’S such as Skyrim. Witcher was able to make a name for itself.
3. Metro 2033
“And what if there’s nothing in there?’ You die and there’s nothing beyond that. Nothing. Nothing remains. Someone might remember you for a little while after but not for long.”
On our list at number three, we have Metro 2033. Metro 2033 was extremely good. The author is Russian Dmitry Glukhovsky and it’s a post-apocalyptic fiction novel. Also as the name suggests it takes place in the Moscow Metro in the year 2033. The books became a series afterward and titled Metro 2034 and Metro 2035. The setting as we have said before was extremely suitable for gaming. The game was extremely good as well but it required a high-end computer in order to appreciate everything it offered.
Metro 2033 was a very good adaptation as the vibe of the metro and monsters were done very well. Every step you took was intense and creepy. The game was offered free several weeks ago from Epic Games Store. Honestly, it is one of the most intense games you can play. Be sure to check it out if you like action-packed games.
4. Assassin’s Creed
“Nothing is true; everything is permitted”
Everybody knows the Assassin’s Creed series. Assassin’s Creed Series was very different from everything we have seen before. It was an extremely interesting game. You were able to climb buildings you were able to assassinate people with different techniques. The feel of the game mixed with Crusades was great. But most people do not know that Assasins Creed Series was inspired by a 1939 novel called Alamut. The book was set in 11th century Persia. The book eventually inspired the game so much, we have seen that most of the characters we have assassinated were important historical figures like in the book (ex: Turkish Vizier Nizam al-Mulk). Also the Assasins motto came from the book; “Nothing is true, everything is permitted.” Assassins Creed became one of the best gaming series we have seen today.
5. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Series
“The point of life was to press on, to do the best you can, to make the world a better place.”
At number 5 we have one of the most played games. The Rainbow Six Series. Rainbow Six was created as a series of books by Tom Clancy. Ubisoft bought the license for it and the games have been around for 20 years. The amount of material allowed Ubisoft to make a fortune. Only on Rainbow Six, there were more than 20 games. if we count the Splinter Cell series and everything we will reach nearly 40 games. Even though we have seen many games from this book series maybe the most successful one was Rainbow Six Siege.
Today Rainbow Six Siege is one of the most played games out there. Even though the game did not start off well. We have seen a comeback from it and now it features a hardcore player base and also a Pro League. Ubisoft hit the Jackpot with books to game adaptations. The games also had a reverse effect and players actually started to read about Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Universe. Of course, the book and the game are a little bit further apart than we would have liked but Ubisoft knows how to make them.
That is our top 5 best books to games adaptations. We all know that games, books, and movies are going to continue to get adapted into each other because they are extremely easy to convert. Coming up for an idea for a game from scratch is great, but we also need good adaptations. We all watched Lord of The Rings and wanted to play a game about it. Some books did not get well adapted into games such as the Harry Potter series. But regardless they were done in order to sell. Today’s kids are going to get much better adaptations with the advancement of technology. We hope that you have enjoyed our list.
