Gaming Art Taken to the Next Level – A Link to the Past 3D Map of Hyrule.
One of the most successful video game franchises of all time is The Legend of Zelda. You can’t debate that even if you tried. Now when you combine a great series like that with art you get some amazing stuff such as this beautiful Link to the past 3D map of Hyrule.
Link to the past 3D map
Game Life has stumbled upon some amazing pieces of custom work in the video game world. From custom NES tables to beds made out of a game controllers, we’ve had a bunch of mouth dropping experiences.
Well we have another thing of beauty and perhaps it’s because we’re biased to Super Nintendo games that we crown this as the most beautiful artwork for A Link to the Past.
Someone put together an awesome 3D Map from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.
For any of you that remember the game, there were two versions of the map. There was the “light” world which is in it’s form in the 3D map above, and there’s also a “dark” world; something like in the show “Stranger Things” where there’s a parallel underworld.
Artist Behind A Link to the Past 3D Map of Hyrule
Ebay seller jefferfrazie-25 is behind the beautiful 3D map and Game Life had to get his story. As impressive as the work is, it’s always great to get down into the details. We were lucky enough to get a response from jefferfrazie-25 on how he came about putting the Link to the Past 3D Map together:
“I started doing these in plastic , and hand painting them a few years ago because I love the NES and SNES games I grew up on. Particularly Zelda, Mario, and Final Fantasy, but many others too. On Christmas in 2015, I put one of my plastic painted maps on Craigslist to help raise money for the holiday. The person who bought it from me put it on his social media and it sort of took off. Before I knew it I had an interview on Dailydot and bought 3 more printers to print more plastic maps, and I did that for some time. I expanded to get a small laser engraver and cutter to make wooden stands for the maps.. and most recently I got a full color sandstone 3d printer. This is what produces the map you see in this auction. The 3D design is from my original work but I then painted the work digitally, the sandstone color printer is able to print the map with all the color. I perform some post op work on the map,and laser cut and engrave and assemble the wooden stand to get the finished product.”
It’s amazing what a 3D printer can do nowadays with a great artist behind the wheels, and although I am sure gamers with an artistic ability have attempted this in the past manually, I bet that it didn’t look as good as this one shown today.
The amount of work involved in just painting the piece and creating the wooden background alone is a lot of work. But thanks to jefferfrazie-25, our eyes get to be spoiled and enjoy something as incredible as this awesome 3D Map.
Buying The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 3D Map
The beautiful 3D map is available for $239. Now that might be a lot of money, however, the amount of work and materials it took to put this piece together is worth more than that. With the holiday season coming up, I couldn’t picture a better gift to buy for that special someone (or even for yourself!).
Here are the details of the map:
“This is a custom full color sandstone map of Hyrule, from The Legend of Zelda, a Link to the Past ( LTTP )
Please review the pictures carefully. This is not a retail item but rather crafted. The map itself is sandstone, and the stand is Dark oak stained and engraved wood.
The Sandstone map measures 2″ tall x 7.5″ x 7.5″,
When in the stand it measures 5.5″ tall, 8″wide and 8.5″ deep.
A unique piece for any LTTP fan or collector. ”
This is definitely on my wishlist when I have some change in my pocket. But I was also curious to see what else jefferfrazie-25 had up his sleeve so I took a look at his completed auctions.
Other 3D Work from the Seller
To my surprise, jefferfrazie-25 has done a bunch of other pieces including 8-bit versions of the Wizard in the cave from the original Legend of Zelda game on the nes, as well as 8bit Ganon!
But on top of that, jefferfrazie-25 has also created a 3D map from Super Mario World! I don’t think I could have chosen a better game to create a 3D map for! Check out the pictures below:
I would love to see more maps in the future! Maps from Final Fantasy would really nerd us out here. But depending on the traction that A Link to the Past 3D Map gets will determine the future of other maps.
