Epic Games has officially canceled the Fortnite World Cup esports tournament this summer over on-going concerns with citing concerns with COVID-19. It is the first time that Epic Games has canceled all live events and pushing it’s competitive play online. Similarily with other esports leagues like the CDL and LCS have moved online.
Last month we said we would provide our evolving 2020 competitive roadmap. Today we wanted to provide updates on where we’re at with plans in 2020!

In a series of tweets, Epic stated “For the rest of 2020, all Fortnite competitions will be held online. Due to the limitations of cross region online competition, there will not be a Fortnite World Cup in 2020. We don’t know when a return to large, global, in-person events will be practical, but we’re hopeful to be able to put on some form of Fortnite World Cup in 2021.”
Will There Be A Fortnite World Cup 2021?
Epic had not set a date for the 2021 Fortnite World Cup but planned to hold the event sometime this summer. Fortnite esports will still continue with it’s Cash Cups and Fortnite Champion Series which were online events anyways. The FCNS will continue in each season moving forward since it had a break in between Season X and Season 1 Chapter 2.
Epic also stated that it will cater to viewers who are staying at home and wanting a dose of competitive Fornite by streaming more competitions.
“We’ve heard the feedback. We are bringing back official broadcasts starting with the FNCS Invitational this weekend! Tune in for all of the action and more competitive news”.
Esports Players and Streamers Effected
There are big names affected by this move. For one, Ninja, one of the most popular streamers in the world stated last year that he was going to work hard and compete in the 2020 Fortnite World Cup after not qualifying for the event in 2019. Other major players like Tfue, who had a poor performance in the world cup in 2019 was looking to make headway this year.
Last year’s solo winner, Bugha, won’t be able to defend his title. It’s a tough break for Fortnite competitive players and fans, however, this is the right thing to do.
