Fortnite controller player wins Australia Open and gets criticized

The controller versus mouse and Keyboard discussion is an old argument that gamers like to have every so often. When we take a look closer, the mouse and keyboard are much more efficient in competitive gaming, however, this was before aim assist was added in games.  Aim assist in games still need some fine-tuning as it’s not 100% accurate. It may produce unwanted results even for mouse and keyboard players. But for console players, it definitely levels out the playing field as we’ve seen recently at a Fortnite esports tournament.

Controversy at the Fortnite Australia Open

The Fortnite Australia Open recently concluded with an unexpected winner. Breso, a Fortnite pro player who plays solo won the event.  This is the first time a controller player won a big event, and controversy immediately followed. Breso was criticized for the win since he’s a controller player, and PC players are saying that it’s simply not fair to have a competition for both types of players. Specifically, when it comes to “building” in Fortnite, console players have become really good at it.

Let us look at the numbers Breso had; 17 eliminations and a 15 point difference between him and the runner up, Looter is Fa. The first major thing that we need to acknowledge is controller players rarely win events let alone having a 15 point difference. Even if his aim assist was god-like there is no way you can outscore that much. However, it is also understandable that mouse and keyboard players do not want to play in major tournaments with controller players. Because it is not an even playing field in their minds. Fortnite is facing a big problem currently with Cross-play.

Cross-play was the number one reason that players loved Fortnite, you can play it from any platform with your friends. This was considered a very good move for a free-to-play game. This was one of the reasons Fortnite broke several world records in gaming. However, should there be cross-play tournaments as well? This is the actual question that Fortnite developers need to answer.
