Dota 2 Gameplay Update – 7.22 Patch

Dota 2 Gameplay Update - 7.22 Patch

On the heels of StarLadder ImbaTV Minor qualifiers, the long-awaited 7.22 patch has finally arrived. Dota 2 developers changed the balance of the game and added Aghanim’s Scepters for all the remaining heroes. Let’s take a look at the biggest changes and how they’ll affect the gameplay.

Consumable Aghanim’s Scepter for Roshan and all the heroes

Considering the fact that the 7.22 patch pushes forward late game potential, this particular update is sure to bring changes and dictate the pace of the game. With Aghanim’s buff for every hero and Roshan, we can expect new builds and frenzy Rosh fights in a bid to get a hold of the new items. The third Roshan will randomly drop either a consumable Scepter item or a Refresher Shard. The fourth Roshan has both. If we take a look at some buffed heroes and their new abilities with Aghanim, they may seem way too overwhelming. A case in point is Templar Assassin and Arc Warden. These two heroes were buffed, despite the fact that they were extremely popular in the previous patch.

Changes in XP Gain for Kills, Streaks, and Denies

Judging from the changes in XP, it seems like 40-50 minutes games will reign over fast-push strategies with summons.

  • Deny XP granted to the enemy (the player being denied) increased from 35% to 40%
  • The amount of XP to reach level 5/6 was reduced from 600/620 to 580/600.
  • XP for killstreaks increased from 200->1250 to 400->1800.
  • XP required to reach level 19+ increased by 100 each level

Basically, it means that gameplay will be pretty even. All the heroes on the map will be able to reach level 6, and killstreaks will help a losing side to have a chance of coming back into the game. The increased amount of deny XP is a great advantage for the unfavorable matchups on the mid lane. Thus, it’s very likely that in the 7.22 patch, everyone will be waiting for the third/forth Roshan to gain an extra advantage. With huge changes revolving around Tower Protection, they will definitely need some.

Tower Damage, Aura Armor, and Multishot Attack During Glyph
  • Tier 3+ towers damage increased from 152 damage to 175
  •  Tower Protection aura armor bonus for Tier 1 Tower increased from 2 to 3
  • Tier 2+ Tower Protection aura armor bonus increased from 4 to 5
  • Tier 2+ Towers now have a multishot attack during Glypg activation. Attacks up to two additional targets. Prioritizes the closest units.

We have all seen the power of chen from Kuroky at the MDL Disneyland, and we all remember the International 4 with 20 min games. Prolonged gameplay is a double edge sword in the Dota 2 community. From one point of view, it’s great for viewers to watch action-packed games with comebacks, never-ending fights, and six slot hard carry. Nevertheless, with dozens of matches played at the same time, it can be a bit tiresome to watch each game and follow the course of events.

Mars and IO in the Captains Mode

Despite the fact that Io was way too overpowered according to professional players, we can see only slight nerfs towards the hero:

  • Stuns interrupt Tether pull (like Timber Chain)
  • Added Scepter upgrade. God’s Rebuke cooldown is now 1.4 seconds during Arena of Blood. Resets God’s Rebuke cooldown when Arena of Blood is cast.

The main problem with Io is that he is extremely powerful on the lane. For instance, it heals, reduces incoming damage, relocates ally from the middle of the fight, split pushes with the main carry, and so on and so forth. Therefore, the impact of the hero is immense. Interrupted tether is not what the community expected in the 7.22 patch. And it seems like we are going to see Io in all the upcoming matches at the Epicenter and the International.

Although Mars is a pretty controversial hero, it will be great to see him in the official matches. As we can see, Ice Frog reduced his damage by 4 and armor by 1. With new Aghanim`s ability, this hero has all chances to join the carry or hard lane ranks.

Overall Changes and Its Impact on the Game

Is this patch as big as everyone thought it would be? Well, opinions are divided. Someone may say it’s the worst patch in the history of Dota 2, while others say the update makes sense. One thing is for sure, patch 7.22 will definitely change the pace of the game and stir up the meta. And what else do players need? Aghanim Scepter for every hero, Tower damage and armor, XP changes are the cornerstone changes in the patch. Although Ice Frog didn’t really nerf strong heroes from the previous patch, their popularity will subside due to the above-mentioned changes.  After all, with slight fixes in the future, this patch will surely bring new colors to the game.  You can see all the 7.22 patch changes here. Stay tuned for all the Dota 2!
